Small fine line marks on two wrists
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands hold a thin pale branch against a plain white background, with painted nails and several rings and bangles visible. The tattoos are tiny single-line black marks on the inner wrists, one a short curved stroke and the other a Y-like shape, drawn with even, delicate linework. The image is in full colour apart from the black ink, and the tight framing keeps the focus on the marks.

Dear Maud,

The well has failed twice since Lammas, so Prior Edric has finally sent for the dowser from Thetford, a thin man with a hazel fork tucked under his arm like a bishop's crook. He walked the cloister garth for an hour without a word, the forked stick trembling in his hands, and then stopped beneath the old medlar, where the brothers have always said nothing would grow.
He asked for ink. Brother Osric fetched the pot of lamp-black from the scriptorium, and the dowser dipped a bent nib and drew a short curve on the inside of his own wrist, quick as a swallow. Then he took Osric's hand, turned it over, and drew a second mark, a little fork like the stick itself. He said the marks would keep the water honest, so that it would not run off where it was not wanted.
Nobody believed him, but the digging began that afternoon anyway. By vespers the spade had struck wet clay, and by compline the water stood cold and clear at the bottom of the shaft, bright as a dropped coin.
Osric has not stopped touching the little fork on his wrist since. Each morning, before he rings the bell, he presses his thumb over it, as if checking the water is still there. The abbot calls it superstition. I think it the most sensible thing I have seen in this place, and I should like you to come and see the well before the frost.
