Flock of birds tattoos on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Several people's arms are shown together, each with a line of small black bird silhouettes flying in a rising or drifting trail across the wrist. The birds are simple solid shapes with little interior detail, and the ink is uniformly black on skin. Painted nails and the blurred floor in the background sit around the arms, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

The 16:42 to Leeds is already showing as delayed when you find the others on the bench under the clock at Sheffield, Tash with a carrier bag of cans, Gemma pretending she isn't crying into a Greggs bag. Someone has drawn birds on a paper napkin in biro: five small silhouettes climbing off a pencilled line, each one a little higher than the last. Tash says it's the plan. Saturday, the shop above the vape place on Division Street, all five of you on the same stool, because the tattooist there does small work for cash and never asks questions about why.

You go on the Saturday. The needle hums and the birds come out solid as cut paper, no feathers, no eyes, just shapes. The artist tells you detail fades and silhouettes hold, and you believe her, because by the time the bandage is on you can already see the line of them trailing towards your hand like they are late for something. Gemma cries again in the car park. Tash says it's the cheap lager. Nobody argues.

Now the platform board flickers and the announcement says the train will be arriving at Platform Two, and Gemma is the first to stand, hitching her rucksack up. You hold the napkin out. She takes it, folds it into her coat, and doesn't say anything. Above the footbridge, a flock lifts off the station roof, hundreds of starlings turning as one dark ribbon over the tracks, and you watch it rise and drift, then break and gather again. It is the same shape as the napkin. You don't point it out. You just wave until the carriage doors close, and the birds keep flying west after the train.
