Matching outline hearts on five wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Five wrists meet at the centre of the frame, each carrying a small, thin black outline of a heart. The lines are even and unshaded, with the hearts placed in similar spots on the inner wrists. The warm, dark background keeps the focus on the skin and the matching designs.

Nell had bought the ink from the chemist on Mill Street, the cheap kind that smelt of pear drops, and we sat in a ring on the boathouse floor with our wrists stacked in the middle like kindling. Five wrists, Mags said, and if one of us pulled out the whole thing would fall apart. Nobody pulled out.

Nell dipped a sewing needle and pricked each heart on with a steady hand, thin lines and no shading, because she said shading was for people who had something to hide. Ada went first and did not flinch. Rosie's came out lopsided and she swore it was the best of the five, so we let her keep that. When Nell reached mine she held my wrist a moment longer than the needle needed, and the lamp hissed, and somewhere out on the mere a moorhen complained.
Past the last cottage the beech wood climbs the hill, and the path into it has a gate that nobody has bothered to lock since the war. We made a promise there that night. Whoever left the village first would walk back to that gate on the first of every month and hold their wrist out to the sky, so the others could see the marks still matched. None of us thought to ask what would happen when the marks faded.
Ada left for the mill towns in April and wrote twice. By November the hearts had gone the grey of old pencil, and in the third month I walked to the gate alone and held my wrist against the empty air where hers should have been. The wood dripped. A cart came down the hill with Rosie driving and Ada asleep in the back, home early, her sleeve pushed up to show a heart that had never really left. Nell had brought the needle and the ink in a tin, as though she had known.
