Floral swirl design on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A foot is raised off the floor, showing a dark ink design of three round blossoms with spiral centres, scrolling leaves and curling tendrils across the ankle and lower leg. The linework is fine and ornamental, with the dark ink appearing solid rather than shaded. The design sits against warm skin on a dark wooden floor, and the image is taken from a low side angle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ballroom of the Majestic had been strung with bulbs since noon, and Nasreen sat on an upturned crate in the cloakroom with a cone of paste balanced on her knee. Through the wall the band was tuning, a bass note climbing up through the floorboards. Her aunt had taught her to work fast and never to breathe on a line. Today she had a cousin waiting, a tin of lemon and sugar, and a sketch of three round blossoms drawn on the back of a bus ticket.

'Keep still,' she said, though nobody had moved. She began with the centre of the first flower, a tight spiral that she turned outward the way her aunt did, one loop and then another, the paste thinning as she pressed. In the hall a saxophone started a slow number and the floor filled. Through the gap in the door she could see Frank Okafor, the caretaker, sweeping confetti into a neat heap, and then, when the tune changed, dancing with the broom.

The scrolls came next, leaves that curled back on themselves like steam off a teapot. The hardest part was the tendrils that ran down toward the heel. She had to tilt the cone and let the line fall of its own weight, trusting her wrist. By the time she reached the third blossom her fingers ached, so she made it a little smaller than the others, the way her grandmother used to, so the eye would travel.

When she sat back, the design looked as though it had grown there overnight. 'It will be darkest on the third day,' her aunt had told her. 'Then it fades, and nobody minds.' Nasreen wiped her hands on a cloth and went back out to the hall, where the cousin was laughing at something Frank had said, and the spirals would stay on the skin long after the bulbs were switched off.
