Cherry tattoo on an ankle in green wedge sandals

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small colour tattoo of two red cherries joined by green stems sits on the ankle of a leg resting on a vintage cream car. The cherries have simple outlines with a soft red fill, and the stems are thin green lines. The muted composition shows a green suede wedge sandal with a woven tan sole, set against chrome trim and a grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cream car has been parked outside the Miners' Institute since Tuesday, and by Thursday the whole of Carnfach Row knows whose it is. Mr Pryce from the colliery office polishes it every Sunday and has never once let a child sit inside. You have a paper bag of Morello cherries from the tree behind Chapel House, and you have worked out that a bag of cherries is worth exactly one drive.

Emrys Pryce is home from the Army with a stiff knee and nothing to do with his summer. He opens the passenger door with a little bow and asks what you want for the fruit. You say the top of the tip road and back, and he tells you the car is not a bus. You tip the bag so one cherry rolls onto the chrome sill, red and shining, and he laughs despite himself and starts the engine.

The road climbs past the winding wheel, the spoil heaps grey as old porridge, the valley below stitched with washing. At the summit he switches off and you sit on the warm bonnet eating cherries, spitting stones over the edge while he tells you about a horse called Duchess who hauled coal for thirty years and was never once let up into daylight. You pick the stalks off as you eat, and when the bag is empty you knot two of the stems together with a length of green wool from your sleeve.

He drops you back at the Row as the lamps come on. You keep the knotted stems in your pocket, and when he sounds the horn twice from the bottom of the street, you do not turn round, but you press the little green pair flat between your fingers until you are sure they will hold.
