The wall beside the fullers' door had been whitewashed twice that week, and Caecilius still could not say what he wanted painted on it. He pointed with a bread-stained finger at the loop Hermia had sketched in red ochre, a flat figure of eight lying on its side. "It has to go round," he said. "Not stop. Round."

She tried the idea the way she tried everything, on the back of a broken roof tile. A feather curled along the top bowl. A rose stem wound through the middle. Two swallows settled on the upper curve, the way the carters painted their signs. Caecilius shook his head at each. Across the lane the lyre-maker's boy leaned on the doorpost, eating figs and watching, and when Hermia added three small hearts along the lower bowl he laughed so hard he dropped a fig in the gutter.

She was tired of guessing. She dipped the reed, set the tip at the crossing point where the two bowls met, and drew the line out without lifting it, through the left loop, across the join, round the right loop, and back again. The ochre ran thin where her hand slowed and thick where it sped up, and the lines overlapped at the centre like the strap of a sandal pulled tight.

Caecilius counted out eleven bronze asses onto the step and asked her to go over the crossing once more, so the join would look neater. She did not. The line had no start to return to and no end to stop at, and when he finally looked at it he nodded slowly, as though he had been waiting a long time for someone to draw his question back to him.
