Flower of Life tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular Flower of Life design made of overlapping circles sits on the forearm, enclosed by a thin outer ring. The fine, even black linework is solid with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink on skin. Two silver bangles, one carrying an Om symbol charm, rest over the wrist against a teal knit fabric.

The pattern was already scratched into the slipway when my father came down to say the boat was late. Nobody had drawn it in chalk that I could see, only a ring of overlapping circles, each one sitting exactly through the centre of the next, as if someone had set a compass on the stone and walked it round until the stone gave up.

Mrs Ruddock at the net loft said it was the old sum the fishwives used for counting herring cans, though she never could show me the working. She said you could count the whole sea in it if you were patient. I was twelve and impatient, so I sat on the cold steps tracing the petals with a mussel shell until the outer ring closed behind me like a lock.
The tide took most of it that night. In the morning only three circles were left, and I thought that was the end of the sum. But the boat came in at slack water with her hold full and a stranger at the wheel, and he stepped ashore, looked down at the stones and laughed. He said the harbour had been drawing that pattern for three hundred years and every spring it came back.
I went down to the steps that evening and started again, circle through circle, until my hand knew where the next one would fall. By the time the outer ring closed, the lamps were lit along the quay and the boats were coming in on time, every one of them, the way they always had before anyone thought to count.
