Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A collage with two photographs of a long-haired tabby cat on the left and a close view of a tattoo on the right. The tattoo is a single black outline of the cat seen from behind, looking over its shoulder, with a textured, feathered edge along the fur and tail. It is set against pale skin with a plain background, and the colour is limited to black ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair pulled out of Boston on a Tuesday, and the cat was still on the generator trailer where nobody had put her. You had seen her the night before, a long-haired grey thing with a tail like a bottle brush, sitting on the coconut shy with the dignity of something that had never paid for a ticket. Mr Adair, who ran the waltzer, said she had come with the Hallidays' stock and belonged to nobody, which on a fair is the same as belonging to everybody.

You fed her from the mess tent for a fortnight. She ate sausage off a paper plate and watched the Ferris wheel turn with her head twisted round, always looking back over her shoulder at the lanes of candyfloss and the lads throwing darts at balloons, as though she were checking the whole noisy thing was still following her. When the rain came in off the Wash she slept in the crook of your arm inside the ticket booth, and you let her.

On the last night the lorries were already backing up to the gates when you went looking for her. The trailer was empty. Her paw prints ran through the wet sawdust towards the road, and at the hedge you found her sitting alone, fur lifting in the wind off the fields, looking back at the lights the way she always had.

You stood there with the shuttered booth behind you and the diesel thick in your throat. Then you lifted your hand the way you would to a friend leaving a party, turned, and walked back to the lorry without her. Somewhere behind you, you were certain, she was still watching the fair go.
