Dear Win, The crate came off the Harwich boat on Tuesday with its lid nailed down and a noise coming out of it like a kettle thinking about boiling. Mr Abernethy from the quay had signed for it and then, because nobody else would, carried it up the hill to the post office on his back. Inside was a Siamese cat the colour of strong tea, with a face like a pair of dark gloves, and round its neck a red ribbon tied in a bow so neat I suspect a steward did it.

The label said Pip, and a card tucked under the ribbon said only Please keep him till I come back for him, signed with an initial and no address. Father says the sailor is probably at the bottom of the North Sea, but Father says a great many things. Pip has taken the top of the parcel scales for his own. He sits there with his front paws tucked under and his tail wrapped round, staring at the door as if the next customer owes him money. He does not chase the string. He does not chase anything.

Every morning the letters go out and every morning he watches the window as though he is counting them. Mrs Tenby brought her husband's Christmas card in yesterday and Pip looked at it so hard she wrote the address twice. I have started to think he knows the postman's timetable better than the postman does.

Last night I found myself on the stool behind the counter, back straight, paws folded under my skirt, waiting for a letter that hasn't come. Pip climbed onto my lap to inspect the arrangement and seemed satisfied with it. Come at Easter, and bring the good scissors, because the ribbon has come loose and I am not sure I can tie it as neatly as he deserves.
