Small solid heart tattoo beside a ginger cat
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A two-panel photo. The left panel is a close-up of a ginger cat's nose and muzzle, and the right panel shows a small solid black or dark grey heart with a curled tail on a patch of skin. The heart is filled in with a simple, slightly textured shading, and the skin around it is unmarked and softly lit.

Now sit closer, because the sea gets into an old voice and I've only the one lung left for shouting. Mrs Pargeter's boarding house stood at the top of Gull Steps, and the only lodger she ever kept for pity was a ginger tom called Biscuit, who came with the rooms the way the damp did.

Biscuit had a mark on his nose, a dark smudge no bigger than a fingernail, shaped like a heart that had been sat on. Every guest who came down to breakfast wanted to know about it. Mr Thorne, a retired ship's purser with a sour mouth, swore it was tar from the harbour wall. Biscuit said nothing, which was his way, and went on sleeping on the warm side of the range.
One February the gale took the slates off the back bedroom, and a young woman from Hull came in out of the rain with a satchel full of charts and no wish to say where she'd come from. She didn't ask about the cat. She sat on the step with him and watched the grey water climb over the breakwater. When he pushed his nose against the cold glass of the window, the mark left a small print there, and she traced it with one finger and laughed for the first time in a week.
Mrs Pargeter always said the mark was only soot from the stove, and she never once pretended to understand it. But every winter after that, somebody new came up those steps with a bag too heavy to carry and left a little lighter. Mind the top step on your way out, my love. It's slick with the sea, and with the ones who came back to see him.
