The cow had been standing on the cliff path since Tuesday, chewing the same thistle with the air of a creature waiting for a bus. Mrs Pargeter swore she had seen it bow to the sea. Her lodgers had given up arguing about it over the kipper breakfast, and young Dennis from room four had taken to leaving it a bucket of windfalls at the stile.

On Thursday night the saucer came down over the headland like a blown-out pudding basin, humming a note that rattled every teaspoon in the boarding house. Dennis watched from the window in his dressing gown. Two thin beams of light unrolled and found the cow, which did not flinch. It simply lifted its head as if it had been expecting a lift all along and wanted to know whether the seat had a cushion.

The cow went up the beam with great dignity, hooves tucked neatly, and did not look back once. Dennis saw the portholes wink as it passed, one, two, three, four, then the light was gone and the headland was only dark grass and a bucket tipped on its side.

Next morning Mrs Pargeter served the kippers with a fresh pot of tea and nobody mentioned the cow. Dennis went down to the stile with a bucket of windfalls anyway, and found a single cloven print pressed into the mud, neat as a full stop, pointing at the sky.
