Small cat outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single-line outline of a cat's head with pointed ears and three whiskers on each side, set on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale, evenly lit forearm, with the palm of the hand visible above and a light grey surface behind.

Dear Nell,

The last of the Marlowe Brothers' Travelling Spectacular folded its tent on Tuesday in a Wigan car park, and nobody made a speech. Father would have wanted a speech. Instead Mr Tibbs the ringmaster counted out eleven pounds in fifties from a biscuit tin and told us the lions were going to a sanctuary in Wales, which is the kindest thing anyone has said to me all year.
The cat is the difficulty. You remember Biscuit, the ginger tom who rode on the strongman's shoulders during the knife-throwing act? He died in March, which left Pearl, a thin grey queen with one torn ear, who never once performed and never once agreed to. She sleeps in the sequin trunk now, curled on top of your old leotard, and she will not come out for anyone except Dorothy from the trapeze, who feeds her sardines from a cupped palm.
Dorothy is taking her to Leeds. She asked me to draw a little face on a card so the new landlady would know which cat was which, and I sat at the kitchen table with a biro for an hour trying to get the ears right. In the end I did it in one unbroken line, a head with two pointed ears and whiskers flicked out on either side, as if the pen had slipped off the paper. It looked so much like her, cross and patient, that I laughed out loud and then had to go and sit in the van.
Come home for Christmas if you can. Bring the good tea. We can sort the trunks together, and you can tell me what to do with the feathered headdress, because I have no idea.
Love, Ros
