Flying swallows across a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a wooden deck, showing a group of small swallows in flight across the top of the foot and up toward the ankle. The birds are drawn in fine black and grey linework with soft shading on their wings and bodies. The photograph is taken from a close angle in warm daylight, with the toes in the foreground and dark foliage behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to the kiln roof on the third day of the north wind, as they always did, and Lysandra counted them from the wall with a cup of barley water going warm in her hand. Five birds, then a sixth that landed badly on the tile and had to shake itself before it could settle. Mikon used to say that swallows carried news between the islands, that a bird flying low over the water would tell you which boats were still afloat. She had laughed at him for years. Her brother's ship had left Kythnos before the autumn storms, and nobody had seen it since.

She set the cup down and went out through the olive terraces, down the goat track to the harbour, because standing still had become unbearable. The fishermen were mending nets on the quay and did not look up. The birds ran ahead of her, dipping and wheeling above the wet stones, veering off each time she slowed, as though they meant to lead her somewhere and were impatient with her pace. One of them skimmed the mole and turned sharply over the water, where the light was flat and silver.

She followed it to the end of the wall. Out past the rocks, a sail was rising over the horizon, grey and patched, leaning into the wind. The swallows had already reached it. They swept round the mast in a loose, quick ring and then peeled away toward the harbour, one after another, as if carrying the message they had been sent to deliver.

Lysandra climbed onto the wall and waited. When the boat came in beneath her, her brother was standing at the bow with one hand raised against the glare, and the birds settled along the rigging above him, folding their wings like letters that had finally been read.
