The plane left my hand at the top of Tanner's Rise, folded from the back of a gas bill because it was the only paper in the car. Dad said it would never clear the hedge. I told him it had a route planned, and he laughed the way he did when he had lost an argument he had not yet noticed he was losing.

It did clear the hedge. It dipped over the stile, caught a warm draught above the cattle trough and swung left over the daisies in the bottom field, where Mrs Oddie sat on an upturned crate with a flask. I ran after it with my laces undone. Every few yards it seemed to lose its nerve and drop, and every time I was certain it had gone for good it lifted again, trailing the dotted line I had pencilled along its wake so it would look as though it was going somewhere on purpose.

It came down at last beside her boot. She turned it over with one finger, read the scrawl on the wing, and said the bill was due Thursday and she had paid it twice already. Then she smoothed the creases flat, folded it again with a neater nose and a sharper tail, and handed it back. We sent it off together, and it flew further than either of us expected, clean over the wall and into the next parish.

Years later another gas bill came, addressed to me this time. I opened it at the kitchen table and found, folded inside the envelope, a small grey plane I had never seen before, with a line drawn after it in careful hand that was not mine.
