The snow had shut the Pass at Holm Gate by the third day, and the Drowned Ram filled with men who had nothing to pay with but talk. Mother Abel would not take coin for a bed in a blizzard. A carter called Tobiah Frell came in last, his fingers grey with frost, and sat on the bench nearest the fire without a word. Abel poured him ale and waited. At length he told how he had buried his brother under a cairn on the north side, and carried the dead man's boots home on his back because they were the only thing left worth keeping. Nobody moved. Abel wrote one line in the ledger and blotted it dry.

In the morning Frell found the book open on the bar, his own words copied out in her square hand, the debt marked paid. He asked what he owed. Abel shrugged. "Nothing you can carry. Nothing I can sell either. I keep the stories so the next soul in here knows someone was warm before them." He laughed, then didn't, and stood a long moment in the doorway with the snow blue behind him.
