A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Pask had painted shop fascias in Reading for twenty-two years and never once been asked to make a sign that meant anything. Then in February 1958 a man from the Campaign office came in with a folded sketch and a tin of enamel, and wanted it on a van door by Friday.

The sketch was a circle with three lines dropping out of it, like a wheel with its spokes dressed for church. Dennis asked what it stood for. The man said nobody had decided yet, and that was rather the point. Dennis thinned black with a drop of linseed, loaded his finest sable, and drew the circle freehand because his compasses had gone to his brother in Slough. His hand wobbled on the second line. He kept going and didn't look at it again until it was dry.

At Aldermaston that April, two hundred people walked past that van on the road, and a girl of about nine asked her mother what the mark meant. Her mother said she didn't know yet, but she would find out. Dennis read about it in the Chronicle a fortnight later, a paragraph on page seven, and cut it out with the good scissors.

He kept the clipping in his tool drawer for thirty years, beside the sable, which he never cleaned properly. When his grandson asked to see it, Dennis took out the cutting and the brush and showed him the ferrule. There was still a fleck of that black ring caught in the metal, and he had never once got it out.
