Heart tattoo on the lower lip

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small heart with a solid red-orange fill and a bold black outline sits on the lower lip, with short black dashes radiating from its top and sides. The heart is the only design, drawn in simple, graphic linework with flat fill rather than shading. The close crop shows the mouth and fingers with cream nails holding the lip open, and the face is not visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the valley of Orrin Vale, where the river ran the colour of weak tea, there lived a cooper's daughter named Mabry Tull who could not keep a secret. Whatever she heard at the well, the whole parish heard by supper. The priest begged her to hush. The miller's wife offered her a silver thimble. Nothing worked, so the cooper took her to Old Hesketh, the wandering tinker who mended kettles and sold small cures from a cart painted with suns.

Hesketh listened, nodded, and reached into his cart for a pot of red ochre and a needle wrapped in waxed thread. He drew a heart on her lower lip, small as a barley grain, and filled it solid. Then he drew short black strokes around it, like the sparks that fly from a struck flint. "Now," he said, "every time you want to tell, the heart will shout for you, and everyone will look at your mouth instead of listening to your words."

It worked better than anyone expected. For a full summer Mabry spoke only in nods and in the small, careful sounds of a girl pretending to be shy. The parish whispered that she had gone soft in the head, but her lips stayed shut on every bit of gossip, and the heart stayed bright under her lip like a coal that would not go out.

By autumn the cooper was dying to know what she had kept, and he asked her at last. Mabry only smiled and touched the little heart with one finger. Then she told him, very quietly, that the most useful thing she had ever learned was how much a person will give away just to see what you are hiding.
