Forever script lettering on the foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script word, Forever, is tattooed across the top of a foot, with the letters joined by sweeping loops and tails. The linework is smooth and consistent, with solid black ink and no shading. The foot rests on a sparkly green fabric and a textured carpet, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

Dear Tessa, the gold leaf you asked about is still in the tin on the top shelf of the van, wrapped in greaseproof paper, so don't go looking for it in the cellar. I've been meaning to write since Mrs Okafor came into the yard on Tuesday with a drawing on the back of a seed catalogue and asked if I could do her husband's name in the old copperplate. I said yes before she'd finished, which you'll tell me is my bad habit.

The word she wanted was FOREVER, and I spent three evenings with it. The trick, as I told you a hundred times, is to let the loops do the work. The F has to lean back as if it's tired of standing up, and the tail of the R must run out under the E and keep going until the eye stops wanting it to stop. I used a number two sable and a steady hand, and the long reach across the top of the card nearly finished me.
When she came to collect, she held it up to the window and said nothing for a long while. Then she asked whether the letters would last, and I told her a good signwriter's line outlasts the sign. She laughed and said that was the only promise she'd ever trust.
Keep the gold leaf for the next job. Bring the big brushes on Saturday. Your loving old master, Walter.
