You will think I have gone soft in the head, but I have started running. Not the proper sort with a club and a stopwatch, just down the lane past the sheep pens every morning before the bread van comes. Mr Pargeter at the shop laughed until he had to sit on his crate of eggs. I told him I had only meant to walk to the stile and back, and then my feet simply kept going, so I let them.

The thing is, I have had nobody to answer to since Dad went into the home. The mornings were all kettles and tablets and standing in the doorway waiting for the carer's car. Now there is the gate, then the beck, then the long bend where the old quarry rail still rusts under the hawthorns. Somewhere past the bridge I stop thinking about the bills and the roof and whether Janet ever wrote back to the council. I just feel like running, if you understand me.

I found your old school pumps in the cupboard under the stairs, the white ones with the pink laces. They are a size too big, but I have stuffed the toes with newspaper and they hold. Tomorrow I will take the path up towards the ruined abbey on the hill, the one you used to dare each other to touch. I will tell you if the gate still sticks.
