Four black chevrons in a row

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows four thick black chevron shapes arranged in a horizontal row, all pointing right. The strokes have a brushed, slightly uneven edge with glossy highlights, giving them a solid, dimensional look. The shapes sit on a plain white background with generous margins, and no skin or body part is visible.

The paint on the bulkhead is still tacky when the mate hands you the brush and tells you to mind the edges. Four chevrons, he says, all pointing aft to starboard, the way the wind pushes a ship when the ship has no say in it. You have never painted anything that mattered. Your first stroke shakes and the black runs into a gutter at the bottom, so you wipe it with a rag and start again while the freighter rolls under your boots somewhere off Finisterre.

Old Halloran has sailed this run for thirty years and talks about the chevrons as if they were people. A chevron, he says, is a promise to whoever comes after: this way, keep going. On the lanes above Avonmouth the council paints the same shape on bends so drivers don't meet the wall at night, and he taught you to read them through the cab window, the reflective strips flaring white as the lorry came round the hairpin at Shirehampton. You thought he was being soft. He was not.

The ship is paid off in the dock on a grey Tuesday. Before you go, you climb to the wheelhouse and find the paint has dried dull, the way paint does when nobody is watching it. Halloran is leaning on the rail with a cigarette he is not allowed to light. Paint them wet, he says, so they catch the light. Dry paint looks like nothing after dark. You take the brush from the tin, go over each chevron once more, and stand back as the deck lamp slides across them, four black arrows gleaming and pointing the one way you were always going to go.
