Dust found its way into everything the survey crew carried, including the brass theodolite Mirela kept wrapped in a wool sock inside her coat. Forty miles of county road ran out from Coyle Wells without a single bend, and Idris Vance had come out from the council with a ledger of diagrams that all looked the same to her: four long kites laid over one another, each a plot someone had sworn was the true line of the old stage route.

Every one of them converged on the same tip, the way the lines gathered at the nib of a pen. Idris tapped the top of the page and said that surveyors since 1911 had put a finger there and declared the well lay underneath. He was right about the point. Mirela sighted along the stake at the road's far end, and her cross hairs settled on a notch in the ridge that looked like nothing at all.

They walked the last half mile with a spade and a flask of tea gone cold. Near the centre of the solid black kite, the shape Idris had inked in because he could not bring himself to guess at it, there was only a flat plate of caliche cracked into hexagons and hard as slate. When they broke through with the spade's corner, the earth beneath was damp and smelled faintly of iron.

Idris wrote the figure in his ledger without looking up. Mirela wiped the theodolite clean, folded the sock back over it, and drove the first stake into the wet ground, closing the fourth line of the kite at last.
