Black fine line drawing of an octahedron with crossing inner lines on a pale background, in a geometric style, with no body placement shown.

Geometric octahedron line drawing

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a diamond-like octahedron drawn with thin and slightly thicker black lines, with internal edges crossing to form a star-like pattern of triangles. The linework is clean and even, with a faint speckled texture. It is in black ink only on a plain off-white background, centred with generous empty space around it.

Dear Hester, the alum crystal came out of the vat on Tuesday with its points where they ought to be, eight faces, every edge true to the ruler. Father would have called it a good week. I had the lamp lit and the frame set, and I counted the faces twice before I let myself believe it.

The trouble is the middle. Where the upper pyramid meets the lower one there is a ring of four edges that should sit flat, and instead they cross, one over the other, like the hands of someone who cannot decide whether to hold or let go. I took the glass to the window and the crossing did not move. I took it out to the forest path at dusk, where the old oaks stand at the edge of the village, and held it up against the last of the light. The crossing turned into a star.

Mrs Ansell from the mill says the forest keeps whatever it is shown. I do not believe her, but I did not sleep. In the morning I found the crystal on the sill with a fine grey dust across its top face, and a line scratched through the dust the length of my thumb, very straight, as if someone had measured it with a rule and then thought better of it.

I am writing to ask whether you would take it, since you always wanted a thing with no ends. I will wrap it in the flannel from Father's drawer and leave it on the post cart on Friday. Do not hold it up to the trees. I would rather you put it on a shelf and let it be exactly what it is, eight true faces and one honest crossing.
