Four cacti in pots on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four small potted cacti sit in a row, each drawn with thin black outlines and no shading. The pots and spines are simple, with a few marks on the largest pot and tiny flowers on two of the plants. The composition is centred on the forearm, with the pale skin and dark background giving the line work strong contrast.

Up at the junction box at Hallow Crossing, where the single line bends past the salt marsh, there was a windowsill with four pots on it. The signalman's wife had put them there the spring the new gates went in. The biggest was a crowned cactus in a brown pot marked with little crosses. Beside it stood a tall one with a flower like a torch, then a round stubby one, and last a thin sprout no taller than a ticket stub.

Every morning the signalman, Tobias Reeve, pulled the levers in the same order and watered the pots from a tin mug, and every morning he said the same thing to them: keep the line clear. Nobody thought much of it. Trains came through, the coal wagons went out to the docks, and the windowsill stayed green through three winters when the rest of the county went grey.
Then the wife died in the autumn, and the pots went untended for a week. The stationmaster found them when he came to sign the book. The tall one had dropped its flower, and the little one had gone soft at the base, but the crowned cactus had put out a new spine toward the glass, as if it wanted to see the rails.
Reeve took up the mug again. He kept the pots in their row, biggest to smallest, and he never moved the smallest one to the front, though the porter asked him to. Some say the sprout still stands at the end of the sill, and that when the night goods come through, its flower opens, a small yellow point, and closes again before the lamp is out. Reeve would only say that the line was clear.
