Coffee cup and cat on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on adjacent fingers of a hand resting on a black leather surface. A steaming coffee cup on a saucer is on the left, and a simple cartoon cat seen from the front is on the right. The linework is soft and the shading is greyscale, with gentle gradients in the cup and cat body.

You have lived in the kingdom of Vell for nine winters, and in all that time the royal teapot has never been filled before the grey cat had inspected it. The palace kitchens run on a rule older than the throne: the first cup of the morning belongs to whoever is awake earliest, and that has never once been the king.

Ottoline sits on the saucer as though she was moulded there. Steam curls up from the rim and she watches it with the calm of a magistrate. You tried once to lift the cup. She did not move. She simply looked at you until you understood that the saucer was hers and the coffee was merely on loan.

Then the frost came early, the southern beans ran out, and the chancellor demanded the black bitter stuff that only the markets beyond the pass could supply. You rode three days through snow with a sack of beans buttoned inside your coat. When you returned, the kitchen was dark and the saucer was empty. Ottoline sat on the windowsill with her tail wrapped round her feet and refused to look at the sack.

You made the coffee anyway, set it down, and waited. After a long while she came down, sniffed once, and settled on the saucer as if she had never left. The chancellor drank his cup standing in the doorway, scowling, and never learned that the finest coffee in Vell came with a cat included, and that the price had always been a little patience.
