Four cartoon turtles across the knuckles

Hand · Colour · Photo

Four cartoon turtle faces, each in a different colour with a red, blue, orange or purple mask, sit in a row across the knuckles. Bold black outlines and simple shading give them a bright, flat cartoon look. Above them, grey script lettering runs across the back of the hand, and small tattoos are partly visible on the fingers below.

Mrs Pearl Okonedo had kept the boating lake at Ashcombe Park for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had asked her to mind four terrapins. "Said they'd be fine in the pond." They were not fine in the pond. They were far too clever for it, and by Thursday the reeds were trampled flat and the heron had stopped visiting.

She named them after the things they clearly thought themselves to be: Blue, who glared at every passing pram; Red, who was always first at the bread; Orange, the mouthy one, who hissed at the council van; and Purple, who slept with his head wedged under a lily pad and would not be moved for love or money. On Saturday they escaped, all four, and the whole park turned out to watch Mrs Okonedo and two toddlers chase them along the gravel towards the bandstand. Somebody filmed it. It was on the local news by teatime.

Nobody in the council office had ever seen a turtle wear a mask with such authority, and the deputy parks officer rang her on Monday to ask, very politely, whether the terrapins might be available for the summer fete. Mrs Okonedo said she would think about it. Then she went down to the lake, sat on the bench with a tin of sardines, and waited. Four heads came up out of the water, one after another, as though they had been expecting her all along.
