Four colour squares and small ticks on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A diagonal row of four small solid squares in blue, pink, yellow and deep purple sits on the inner forearm. Two thin dark tick-like lines sit above and below the squares, one at upper right and one at lower left. The squares are flat colour blocks with no shading, and the composition is simple and centred on the forearm against a pale skin tone and a light background.

Mrs Okonedo had the four inks lined up on the bench before Tom came in, lids off, as if the shop had been waiting for him to be late again. Blue, pink, yellow, and the plum-black she called aubergine because the supplier had given up on a proper name. Beside them lay the proof sheet from the Hallam Street job, a wedding invitation run four times over, and every corner of it wrong.

"Registration," she said, and tapped the little cross-hair ticks printed in the margins. "They are meant to sit on top of each other. Yours wander like sheep."
He had been pulling the lever for six weeks and could feel the squeeze in his wrist, the way the press took half a second too long to drop. He laid the blue down first, as she had shown him, then the pink, watching the ticks drift apart on the card like two people walking off from a kiss.
"Again," she said, not unkindly.
So he cleaned the plates with paraffin until his knuckles stung, and laid each ink down square, and at four o'clock the light through the skylight turned the bench the colour of weak tea. The fourth pass came off clean. The ticks met. The yellow sat exactly in the space where the others had failed to agree, and it made a small grey-green that had not been on any card that morning.
Mrs Okonedo held the sheet up to the window and said nothing for a long time. Then she pinned it to the board above the door, beside forty years of spoiled proofs, and went to put the kettle on.
