Four cat heads with flower crowns on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Four cat faces in a diagonal row run up the inside of a forearm, each wearing a small floral crown in pink, red, yellow or orange. The linework is fine and outlined in places, with flat areas of colour and soft shading on the fur. The designs sit against a plain white brick wall, and the arm fills the frame from the lower left to the top right.

Mrs Pennock had woven the crowns from sweet peas and red valerian off the chapel wall, and by the Tuesday before the regatta all four harbour cats had been measured for one. Pilchard, the ginger, bore his with the stiff offence of a cat who has been dressed for a wedding he was not invited to. Admiral, the brown tabby, did not notice his at all, which was the only sensible approach.

The fleet went out before light, so the cats kept the quay in the mornings and the wives kept the cats. Nell, the cream one with the yellow marigold, sat on the coiled rope outside the net loft and watched the lanterns slip past the breakwater one by one. Dorrit, the least trusting of the four, came down from the wall only when the bread van pulled in, and then she sat in the gutter and washed the crown off her head with a single methodical paw.
The boats came back on the evening tide, low in the water and loud with gulls. Mrs Pennock counted the hulls twice from her step, then counted the cats, because counting was how she kept her nerves in order. Four crowns sat on the harbour wall in a neat diagonal, though nobody had seen them arrange themselves that way. The wind had shaken most of the petals loose, and a single pink rose had been pinned to Pilchard's crown that had not been there at breakfast.
Her grandson, who had been told the boats were late, asked whether the cats had been praying. Mrs Pennock said they had been keeping watch, which was the same thing, and went down to meet the boats.
