Small fine-line tattoo of four hearts in blue, yellow, green and red, descending diagonally behind a person's ear.

Four coloured hearts behind the ear

Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of the side of a person's head, with hair pulled back and an ear visible. Four small hearts descend diagonally behind the ear, each outlined and filled in solid blue, yellow, green and red from top to bottom. The image is cropped tightly around the ear, with a black stud piercing and a hoop earring visible, and the plain skin tone gives the coloured ink strong contrast.

Dear Ruth, The Marigold came in on Tuesday with her hold half empty and her skipper sitting on a bollard like someone had robbed him. Your letter was in the bag with the post, soaked at one corner, and I read it on an upturned creel while the gulls quarrelled over the fish heads. You asked again whether I still send the little drawings, and I want you to know I have not stopped, though you have told me twice now that a grown woman does not need hearts on her shopping list.

We agreed on the four of them the morning you left for Grimsby. Blue for a flat calm sea you can see your face in. Yellow for a catch that pays the rent. Green for the nights the wind works through the chapel slates and I lie awake listening. Red for the one I still cannot write out in full. I drew them on a tally sheet and folded it into your oilskin pocket because you said a deckhand needs something to look at besides water. You kept it, you say. Good.

Last week the red one was nearly all I had. Dad's knee went, the mackerel went thin, and I sat at the kitchen table with the kettle screaming and no words at all. Mrs Hallam came up the lane with a tin of shortbread and asked what colour I was feeling, the way she asks everything, and I laughed until I cried into the tea towel. She stayed till the light went, talking about her hens, and by then the green had come back into my chest somehow.

So I am sending the sheet again, with a fifth heart added in the margin and no colour yet. You can decide what it should be when you are home. Mind the tide off the Dogger. Yours, and I mean it in every shade, Nell.
