Four-leaf clover on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black four-leaf clover sits on the inner wrist of a hand resting on white bedding, with a grey sleeve visible at the bottom of the frame. The clover has simple outlines with minimal detail and appears to be filled in with black ink. The neutral white background and soft natural light keep the focus on the small tattoo.

Dear Nessa, The laundrette on Cathcart Road shuts at eleven now, so I've been doing my washing at midnight with the one other insomniac in Glasgow, a man who reads Dostoevsky under the strip light and never once looks up.

Last night, waiting on the dryer, I found a four-leaf clover pressed flat between the pages of a library book somebody had left on the bench. Mrs Dunne's name was written inside the cover, the teacher who taught us to count on the bus home. I sat there counting the leaves the way she used to, one for hope, one for faith, one for love, and the last one for luck, which I still can't account for.
This morning I took myself to the ink shop on Sauchiehall Street, the one with the flickering neon sign, and asked for the clover small enough to hide beneath a watch strap. The artist didn't ask me why. He just said the solid black takes longer to settle than people expect, and I said I had time.
So that's where things stand. The clover's inked now, a little tender, and the library book is in my bag because I couldn't bring myself to leave it on the bench. Come over at Christmas and we'll track down the man with the Dostoevsky together. Tell him the washing's done. Love, Iona.
