Four-line text tattoo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a person's forearm carrying four lines of plain black capital lettering that read ELATION, ELEGANCE, EXALTATION and I LOVE SUPREME. The person wears a white top and zebra-print shorts and holds a cigarette, with a brick wall behind. The image is warm toned with soft focus on the arm and the text is clearly legible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down, the kettle's not yet boiled and the tale is longer than the tea. You'll have heard about the card in Anna Gillies's sewing box, but everyone on this island has got it wrong, so listen. She kept it pinned above her Singer, a scrap of brown paper the travelling picture-show man left behind when his van broke its axle at the pier. Four lines in her neat schoolroom capitals: ELATION, ELEGANCE, EXALTATION, and then I LOVE SUPREME, underlined twice as if the pen had got cross with it.

Every morning before the first hem, she'd read the card aloud to the gulls on the windowsill. Nobody knew why. The dance-hall women from Stornoway thought she was touched, and maybe she was a bit, but she was also the best seamstress between here and the Butt. When a lassie came in one wet March needing a dress for a wedding she could not pay for, Anna took the girl's measurements, sewed the lot in a single night, and charged her one penny.

The girl came back the next week to pay what she owed, and Anna would not take it. Instead she pressed the brown scrap into the girl's palm. The girl read it standing on the step, laughed out loud at the last line, and went off down the road with the wind pulling her hair. I'm told she still carries it in her coat pocket. Anna never did get the card back, and to this day the gulls on that windowsill still have no notion what it means.
