Four names in an infinity loop on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Black script lettering spells out four first names, linked by a looping infinity-style line with a small red heart at the centre. The tattoo sits on the top of a bare foot, photographed against a dark, textured surface. The linework is solid black with clean edges, and the red heart is the only colour in the design.

The sports hall still smells of floor polish and warm squash, and the name badges are laid out alphabetically on a trestle table, which tells you Mrs Okafor has been in charge again. You find yours under the H section, peel it off, and press it to your jumper before you can decide whether you want to be recognised. Somewhere behind you a man laughs too loudly at a joke you didn't hear, and the sound is so exactly the sound of Year Eleven that your stomach drops.

The four of you used to share one biro at the table by the radiator, passing it hand to hand so nobody had to ask a teacher for another. Sam drew the loop first, a lazy figure of eight with the names running round it, and Nick insisted on the red heart in the middle because it was the only pen in the pencil case that wasn't blue or black. Leo wrote his name in curly letters that took up most of the top curve. Eric, who was never any good at drawing, wrote his in capitals he later swore were on purpose.

Sam isn't here. He sent a message from Vancouver saying he'd try for the next one, and nobody believed him, least of all Nick, who has been pouring wine for everyone since eight. Leo arrives late with a bottle of something fizzy, and he finds you by the crisps before you find him. He doesn't ask about your job or your flat. He just says, 'Remember the biro?' and you say the heart was Nick's idea, and he says it was his, and you both laugh, because it doesn't matter whose it was.

Later, when the lights go up and the caretaker starts stacking chairs, you spot the old sign-in sheet tucked into a clipboard by the door. Four lines of handwriting, one loop in the margin, a red pen heart you'd forgotten existed. You fold it into your pocket. Across the hall Nick raises his glass at you, Eric is already pulling on his coat, and somewhere over the Atlantic Sam is asleep, the loop still going round.
