Four sharks silhouette design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows four solid black silhouettes of sharks arranged diagonally down the frame, with the largest at the upper left and the smallest at the lower centre. The shapes have smooth outlines with no internal linework or shading, and the fins and tails are clearly defined. The plain white background gives the design a stencil-like, high-contrast composition.

Don't look over the side yet, lad, you'll only frighten the gulls. Keep your hands on that rope and listen. Four of them came off the Azores the summer I was shipping on the Marigold, and they kept station under our keel for nine days, like mourners walking behind a cart.

The biggest was out front, a grey-backed brute the crew called the Bishop because he never hurried and never looked at anyone. Behind him came the others, each a little smaller than the last, until the youngest was no longer than my forearm and had to work twice as hard to keep pace. Not one of them ever knocked the hull. Cook tossed the gutted mackerel over the side the first morning and they ignored it. By the third day they were taking scraps from the bucket, and by the fifth the smallest would nose the cook's boot when he came up from the galley.

On the ninth morning the wind dropped and the sea went glassy. The Bishop rolled once, slow as a church door, and went down into the blue. The others followed in order of size, the little one last, and the captain stood at the rail with the musket still in his hands because nobody had told him what he was supposed to do with it. We made Gravesend that evening. I never saw the four of them again, but every spring since, when the pilot boats come out, I count the fins in the wake and never once come up short.
