Four star and wing designs on skin

Hand · Colour · Photo

The collage has four labelled panels, A to D, each showing a close crop of skin with a bright illustrated design. The designs include a pink ring with a yellow and orange star, a red and white wand, and white feathered wings with a star at the centre. The linework is clean and outlined, with flat colour fills in pink, red, yellow and white and no visible shading, and the panels are arranged in a simple grid.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had come down on the Saltgate market all morning, and the old woman under the blue tarpaulin had sold nothing but a sack of onions. Then a girl in a yellow mackintosh stopped at her table and asked for the ring with the star inside it, the one pinned to the back board where the light did not reach.

The seller said it was not for sale, only for lending. A ring with a star inside it, she said, was a door that opened once for a person who could hold a wand steady in the wet. She took a red wand with a white tip from a biscuit tin and laid it on the soaked wood beside a bowl of cold coins.

The girl lifted the wand. The rain stopped at the edge of the tarpaulin in a perfect ring, and inside it stars came out of the pewter sky one by one, like lamps being lit in a row of houses. Gulls turned over the car park. A man with a barrow forgot his barrow and stood with his hat in his hand.

When the rain began again, the girl had given back the wand and the ring was only a ring. She paid in brass buttons. The old woman counted them twice and found, tucked among them, a single white feather, which she pinned inside her collar and never once mentioned to anyone.
