Pink gem and lotus tattoos on both thighs
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The image shows two thighs with matching tattoos of a faceted gem framed by lotus petals. The left tattoo is solid pink shading with yellow accents at the base, while the right is pink single-line outline work. The soft pale bedding and background keep the focus on the designs.

Three weeks out from Falmouth, the stone still rides in the toe of your spare stocking at the bottom of the sea chest, and Mrs Okafor in the galley has started asking what clinks when the ship rolls. You tell her it is ballast. She laughs and says ballast is never pink.

It was cut in Penzance by a man who owed your father money and paid in a single crystal instead. He held it up to the window of the chandlery and said it would throw light like a lamp if you kept it out of the sun. Your father did not live to see it set. What he left you was the chart, the one with the lotus drawn in the margin in brown ink, petal stacked on petal, and the gem sitting in the middle like a bud that would not open.
On the fourth night the captain finds you at the rail. Hollis is a superstitious man who has buried two mates at sea and will tell you so before you have finished your tea. A stone bought with a dead man's debt, he says, will pull a ship down. You say nothing. You open your hand, and the wind takes the dark for a moment before the lamp catches the facets and throws them, pink, across the black water.
The stone goes down slowly, turning, and where it sinks the sea lights up in a ring that opens petal by petal outward until it fades. Hollis takes off his cap. You go below and take out the chart, and with a steady pen you finish the lotus in outline only, because the colour was never yours to keep.
