The image pairs a photograph of a small Hello Kitty design on the lower abdomen of a woman in denim shorts with a sheet of several Hello Kitty designs labelled HC-49. The main design shows the cat in a pink dress with a large bow, drawn in sketchy black outline with pink fill, and the smaller repeats are arranged around the sheet. The palette is limited to pink, black and brown linework on a white background, with the skin shot in soft natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat came back on the third morning with a bow of rose-coloured silk knotted on its head, and nobody in Sekhem-reed could say where it had found such a thing. Old Hetep, who painted the outer walls of the tombs for a living, took one look and reached for his charcoal. He said a creature that dressed itself should be drawn properly.

He sketched it quickly, the way he always began, with loose black strokes that never quite closed. Whiskers ran out past the edge of the plaster. The ears were two hooks. He left the body bare and called it finished for the day, and the cat sat on the wall beside it for an hour, washing one paw as though it had seen the same drawing a hundred times before.

Next morning there was a pink dress on the figure, laid on in ochre and madder. Nobody had seen him fill it. The weaver across the river swore she had lost a length of rose linen from her loom in the night, and her daughter swore the cat had dragged a spool of thread past the reeds. Hetep only shrugged and said the cat had asked for a sash.

By the end of the season the wall was full of small cats in pink, and the village children learned to walk past them without touching the paint. When Hetep died, his apprentice found a last sketch under the lime wash: a single cat with its bow tied, unfilled, waiting for someone to finish the colour.
