Cherry blossom and falling petals on the hand
Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo
A hand rests across a dark top and white shirt, showing a pink cherry blossom flower on the back of the hand. Five solid pink petals form the flower, and smaller single petals trail down towards the wrist. The design uses flat, solid colour with no visible shading, and the pale skin keeps the composition simple and centred.

Pell Hadley rose before the bells of Saint Aud had finished their first chime, because the bread would not rise for anyone who lay abed. Her oven was an old brick mouth at the back of the shop, and it wanted feeding with split ash before the sky over the quarry turned grey.

On the shelf above the flour bins sat a jar of pink sugar she had made the spring her husband went north with the drovers. He had told her the cherry trees on the ridge flowered for only nine days, and that she should bake something to last longer than that. So she pressed the petals flat with a rolling pin, five at a time, and set them in the glaze of the morning buns.
One cold morning a girl came to the back door with no coat and her hand held close to her chest. She asked for bread that would last the journey to the coast. Pell gave her a loaf and a twist of sugar and told her to keep the petals dry. The girl laughed and said petals never kept, that was the whole point of them, and she walked off down the lane dropping small pink pieces of sugar behind her.
Pell followed the marks to the bottom of the lane and found nothing but first light on the water. When she came back, the bread had risen without her and the jar was half empty. Every morning after that, she found one dry petal on the back step, and she swept it into her apron pocket before she lit the ash.
