Four symbol emblem with rings, triquetra and feather

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black line drawing of an emblem made from four separate motifs arranged left to right: stylised letterforms, three interlocking rings, a triquetra knot and a feather quill beneath. The lines are solid and uniform with no shading, and the image is entirely black on white. The composition is centred and sits on a plain background with no body part visible.

Sid Ashdown had been bent over the walnut plaque since the market opened, and the rain had drummed on the tarpaulin for so long he had stopped hearing it. Three hours of gouging, and the letters finally sat right: a tall angular Z, a looping curl at its foot, an S with its spine pulled tight like a bowstring. Between them he had set three interlocking rings, cut so the grain ran through each one, then a knot of three looping arms that had taken longest, because one wrong nick would undo the lot.

Ruth Pardoe came back at four, shaking water from a green umbrella that had seen better decades. She looked at the plaque for a long time without speaking. "You've put the feather under everything," she said. "I asked for it to lead." Sid turned the board over. The quill beneath the letters pointed off the edge towards the canal, its vane cut in fine slivers. "It leads," he said. "Just not the way you're reading it. The letters are what you leave behind. The feather's what carries them."

She laughed, which he hadn't expected, and paid him in coins still warm from her pocket. He wrapped the plaque in a feed sack and walked it down through the stalls, past the clock man and the cheese woman packing up under bin bags, rain sliding off the peak of his cap. At the edge of the market the canal ran grey and busy with drops. He set the parcel on the wall and let the water bead off the oiled wood. Then he went home the long way, because the short way ran past his father's old shop, and he was not ready for the shutter.
