Cartoon characters full sleeve on an arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show a full sleeve of cartoon characters across the upper arm and forearm, including a mermaid, a lion cub and a green cartoon figure. The characters are set against a pink and blue sky with clouds and small stars. The shading is soft and airbrushed, with bright colour throughout and the design wrapping around the arm.

The night the characters got out, Joan was up to her elbows in cerulean wash, sponging a sky that refused to be pink on the first try. The mermaid had already climbed down from her rock on cel forty-one and was sitting on the edge of the light table, trailing her tail in the water jar and complaining about the green they had given her fins.

'It's sage,' Joan said. 'Nobody asked me either.' The lion cub came padding across the lightbox, all paws and bravado, and wanted to know whether the savannah was really just a sheet of paper on a hook. Joan told him yes. He sulked and sat down in a puddle of magenta. Somewhere behind the rostrum camera, a small green block with a grin like a cracked tile was trying to eat the corner of a storyboard.
By two she had run out of patience and out of sky. She laid the last wash over the top of the sheet, a soft pink fading to blue at the horizon, and dabbed a handful of white for clouds. The creatures drifted up to watch, the way people watch a bonfire, and for a while nobody said anything at all.
At dawn the director found the cels stacked tidy on the desk and the water jars all full. Only the sea-blue sprite with the bubble-shaped head had stayed behind, sitting in the drying clouds with its tiny fist raised, as if it had won a race nobody else knew about. Joan left it there and signed the sheet in the corner, under the stars.
