The frost had come in the night, and by seven the field behind Hollins Farm was a sheet of grey tin. Ruth found the easel standing in the cattle shed, its legs planted in the straw, a canvas propped on it with a faint pencil drawing of a small yellow creature sitting on its own tail. Nobody on the farm owned an easel. Her son had left it in the shed in October, after a bad summer of trying to be a painter.

She had assumed the drawing was his, a joke he'd meant to finish. But the paint pot beside the easel was still wet, and a green glass bottle with a red star on its label stood at the base, a third full, its cork pushed back crooked. Someone had been sitting in the straw with a brush, filling in yellow and red, and had left the grey sketch unfinished where the light from the door ran out.

Ruth wasn't a fanciful woman. She fed the pigs, counted the ewes, and did not hold with ghosts. But on Tuesday the paint had moved. The yellow had crept over the pencil lines, the red cheeks were brighter, and the bottle was empty, its cork lying on a bale like a tossed coin.

That evening she bought a fresh tin of white and set it by the easel, along with a bar of chocolate and a note saying the shed stayed warm if the door was kept shut. In the morning the tin was open, the chocolate gone, and the canvas held a second figure beside the first, grinning, a brush raised towards the grey sky as if asking her to join in.
