A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The van coughed twice past the sign for Dry Creek and died for good, its tyres sinking into the grit at the edge of the road to Calloway Wells. Pearl Mossop stood in the heat and glared at the open bonnet as if it had personally insulted her. Her nephew Alfie climbed out of the back in his green beach towel, a pair of purple swimming goggles pushed up over his fizzing orange hair, and announced that he had a plan.

His plan was to walk. The sign at the crossroads said fourteen miles, and Alfie said the goggles could see through heat, which Pearl told him was not a thing goggles could do. He pulled them down anyway, squinted at the horizon and reported a water tower standing on the far side of the flats. Pearl saw only a shimmer of silver that might have been a puddle or a lie. Still, she shouldered the cool box and followed him, because the alternative was sitting beside a dead van listening to the tyres tick as they cooled. Lizards scattered from their feet. A tumbleweed rolled past them, then turned round and rolled back, as if it had forgotten something.

By the third hour the silver shape had become a tower, rusty and real, with CALLOWAY written on its side in letters the sun had almost finished with. A woman at the petrol pump told them the breakdown service had towed a blue van into the yard on Tuesday, and that someone had left a bag of oranges in the cab for whoever came looking. Alfie pushed his goggles back up, took a bottle of water from the cool box and drank the whole thing without stopping.

"Told you it was there," he said.

Pearl opened her mouth to argue and found she had nothing to put in it. The tower stood exactly where he had said it would, with its painted letters and its patient rust, and that was one thing she could not pretend otherwise about.
