Fox and flowers on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A colour fox head in orange, brown and cream sits on the upper arm, with a white lily beside it. Black and grey dotwork flowers fill the lower upper arm and extend onto the forearm, with fine linework on the petals. The photo is taken at an angle in a tiled bathroom, with the tattoo as the main focus.

Nell had been up since four, pinning white lilies into the foam while the marquee still smelled of wet grass. The bride had asked for lilies and nothing else, which meant every bloom had to be perfect, and Nell had already rejected three buckets' worth. Outside, the field was grey with dew, and the hedge at the bottom of the lane was loud with birds.

The fox came at half past nine, when the caterers were carrying trestles across the lawn. It walked straight up the gravel as if it had been invited, stopped beside the cake table, and looked at Nell with the patience of something that had seen a hundred weddings. Its coat was the colour of clay fired too hot, and one ear had a notch in it. Nobody screamed. The groom's grandmother laughed and said the foxes had always come for the flowers.

Nell found it later, sitting among the dahlia stems behind the barn, a single lily caught gently in its jaws. She expected to be angry. Instead she crouched, held out her hand, and told it the bride would have to make do with the rest. The fox dropped the flower at her feet, shook the dew from its whiskers and trotted off into the hedge.

At the reception the bride counted the arrangements twice, frowned, then noticed the lily Nell had tucked into her hair, pale and unbruised and a little crooked. "Where did you get that?" she asked. Nell said a neighbour had given it to her, which was true enough, and went back to the kitchen to wash the dew from her hands.
