Fox head with leaves on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red fox head faces right, with its ears, grey muzzle and open jaws shown in shaded detail. Bold black outlines define the fox, with brown and orange leaves and acorns filling the space behind it. The colour ink is saturated and dominant, while the black linework and grey shading give the design strong contrast against the skin.

Now you'll want to know why the fox came up from the shore that autumn, and I'll tell you, though the tide was already turning and Mrs Pascoe would have my hide for letting the fire go low. It came up Harrow Lane with its brush held out level like a gentleman carrying a lamp, stopped at the gate of Gull Crest, and looked at the house the way a man looks at a letter he has been waiting on.

Mrs Pascoe had kept the place forty years with a rule for every creature. Gulls could have the bins. Gentlemen could have the back parlour. Foxes, she said, could have nothing at all, so she shut the scullery door on it and went back to her pastry. But the fox sat under the oak, and the wind came round off the sea and shook the acorns loose, one, two, a dozen, rattling down the slates like thimbles dropped on a stone floor.
Next morning the front step held a brass key nobody in the house had seen since the war, green at the ridges, and beside it four acorns set in a row, each one neat as a stitch. Mrs Pascoe picked up the key, turned it over twice, and said nothing at all, which in forty years nobody had ever heard her do.
Some say that was the end of the matter. I say the fox has been in the scullery every October since, taking one kipper and leaving something in exchange, and that Mrs Pascoe leaves the back door on the latch. Pass me the poker, would you. The fire's gone to ash and I've talked myself dry.
