The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate inn for six days, and Nell Ashworth had counted every one of them in chalk on the scullery door. The coal was low, the salt pork had gone into the stock, and her father had stopped pretending the road would clear before Christmas. So when the fox cub appeared on the back step on the seventh morning, she did not shoo it away. She set down the heel of yesterday's loaf and watched it take the crust in small, careful bites.

It came back every morning after that, always sitting with its tail wrapped round its paws and its face turned over one shoulder, as though checking that someone was still standing behind it. Nell called it Mister Bramble. Her father said foxes were trouble and kept the hens shut in, but he never once bolted the back door. Guests came down to breakfast in their stockinged feet and asked what the girl was doing feeding the yard, and she told them it was nobody's business but the snow's.

On the ninth day the plough came up the valley road, a yellow lantern shouldering through the drifts. The carter came in stamping and laughing and said there had been a fox on the bridge with a dead hare in its jaws, dropping it at every gatepost as if paying tolls. Nell laughed with him and kept her hands busy with the kettle.

Later, scraping the step clean, she found the cub's small prints leading away from the door. Beside them ran a second set, larger, pressed deep into the crust where something had sat down to wait.
