Heart and aeroplane on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a heart with a solid black aeroplane at its lower right edge, the trail of the plane curving out from the heart. The linework is thin and even, with the aeroplane filled in solid black. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred background of a red toolbox and workshop.

Dear Nell,

We were hauling the net off Dogger when the aeroplane came over, low and slow, a silver thing with its lights blinking as if it had lost its way. Skipper said it was bound for Amsterdam. Ray reckoned Reykjavik. I said nothing, because I was thinking of your sister's suitcase by the door in Cleethorpes, the one with the broken wheel she kept promising to fix.
The catch was poor, eleven boxes of plaice and a heap of dogfish nobody wanted. Mick cut his thumb on the otter board and swore at the gulls for an hour. I kept my eyes on the sky. The plane turned out over the water and bent its line south-west, away from us, and the wind took its drone before we could hear it properly.
Here is what I did with the spare bit of chart. I drew a heart in the margin, the way you used to draw them on my lunch tin, and then I put the plane at the bottom edge so it was just leaving, its track curling back round towards the heart. I know it looks daft. But I thought, there goes Maggie, and there's the heart still here, and the plane doesn't have to pick one.
Tide turns at six. I'll post this from Grimsby if we get in before the weekend.
Love, Tom
