Farfalle pasta on the inner forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a single farfalle (bow-tie) pasta shape with a ruffled edge, filled in yellow. A dark outline defines the edges, and grey shading along the folds gives the pasta a slight three-dimensional curve. The design is small and centred on the forearm against plain, pale skin.

At ten past three the hospital kitchen on Ward Nine smelled of bleach and the last of the tomato sauce. Nasreen Akhtar stood over the steel pot with a wooden spoon and watched the farfalle tumble. Nine minutes, she had told the catering manager twice, not twelve, or the bows split at the pinch and went to glue. Tonight nobody was listening except the fridge hum and a radio murmuring about fog on the M62.

Upstairs in bed four, Mr Pendle had asked for something that tasted of Sunday lunch at his mother's. Nasreen had no such recipe, only a catering pack and a tin of butter she kept in the staff fridge with her name on the lid. She tossed the hot pasta with butter, lemon zest and a pinch of salt, the way a night sister had once shown her, and carried the bowl up in the lift past the vending machine that buzzed like something unwell.
Pendle was awake, watching the thin light under the door. He ate three forkfuls slowly, then set the fork down on the tray. "Too pretty to eat," he said, and she thought at first he meant the shapes. He nodded at the window, where the sky over the car park was going the colour of dishwater. "My wife used to say they looked like little ties for the wind. Always tying them on to something."
Nasreen went back down before the porters arrived. At the pot she fished out one bow and held it to the strip light, a yellow ruffled thing with its dark folds, still holding its shape. She pressed it flat between two fingers and put it in her pocket, then wrote 0600 on the board and set the timer for nine minutes.
