Geometric wolf head on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head facing the camera is tattooed on the outer thigh, with pale blue eyes and a dark nose. The design is made from angular, faceted planes of grey, blue and tan with soft shading between them. The wolf fills the frame against plain skin, with the top of grey shorts visible above it.

Nobody on Hesk could say when the wolf first came down from the quarry, only that by the time Orla Tennant was old enough to carry peat, it had a place on the north shore between the two standing stones. The shepherds called it the Cutter, because its edges were sharp enough to split slate, and because when the light was low the grey of its coat broke into planes like a stone that has been dressed and dressed again.

The winter her brother did not come home from the fishing, the men said the wolf had taken him. Orla did not believe that. She had seen the wolf on the harbour wall the morning he went out, sitting square with its pale blue eyes on the water, as though it were counting the boats. So she took a lantern and a heel of bread and walked the cliff path while the men were still arguing in the public house.

She found the wolf at the cove where the rock was broken into steps. It did not run. It stood, and when it moved toward the water she followed, and below the ledge she found her brother's boat drawn up on the shingle, oars shipped, mast laid flat along the stones. Her brother sat against the hull asleep with a bandaged hand, and the sea had been kept off the boat by a wall of cut stone that no tide had moved.

The men said afterwards that the wolf had built that wall in a night, one flat blade of rock set on another. Orla only remembered that when she carried her brother up the steps, the animal went ahead with its head turned back, watching the lantern, until the path was level and it lay down where the men would see it first.
