The fox is asleep on the pit gate again, and you have to step around her to reach the lamp room. Her eyes are shut tight, the way the old men say a fox shuts them when she has decided not to see you. Your father says she belongs to the spoil heap and to nobody else, and that the crescent over the winding wheel is what she keeps watch by when the shift runs late.

Tonight the cage is stuck at four hundred feet and the men below are shouting numbers up the shaft. You count the stars on the lamp-room window, one, two, and a third pricked out by frost, and you tell the foreman's boy that the fox has her eyes closed so nothing can go wrong while she sleeps. He laughs. He is lying in the coal dust with his cap over his face, and you do not say anything else.

Then the second face comes up in the dark behind her, the one with the feathered collar, and it is not asleep at all. It has the same black stripe across its cheek, and it opens its eyes on the lamp. Somewhere below, a hammer rings twice against the steel, the signal for the cage to come up, and the wheel begins to turn.

Your father is in the cage. You see his hand on the rail, grey with dust, and you lift your own hand to the fox because it seems the polite thing to do. She does not open her eyes. But the wheel turns, the cage rises out of the dark with every man in it, and you keep your hand up until the moon slides behind the headgear.
