Free and Yourself script on both heels
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows the backs of two bare heels resting on a rough stone surface. The word Free is inked in thin black script on the left heel, and Yourself is inked in matching script on the right heel, with the linework crisp and even. The soft lighting and tight framing keep the focus on the two words, with the textured stone filling the lower part of the frame.

The stones on the Carrow road were grey and pitted, and my father would not let anyone else cut the milestones. He taught me script the winter I turned twelve, tapping the chisel so lightly the stone barely sang. Every letter had to be thin and even, he said, or the rain would fill it and the message would drown.

The summer my brother Tobin was pressed into the king's levy, he came to the quarry with his boots in his hand because the leather had split. He asked what I would cut for him if he were ever lost on the marsh. I said I would write his name. He laughed and said he wanted something a man could read while running away.
So I carved it on the stone at the border gate where the road bends, two words set so the guards could not make them out from their hut. FREE went on the first stone. YOURSELF went on the second, a stride further on, so anyone leaving Carrow had to turn and look back to read the whole of it. Tobin walked past both without a glance, and I thought he had forgotten.
In the autumn a cart came back from the marsh with his boots tied to the tailboard, and a sergeant who could not read handed me a folded paper. Tobin had written only one line: he had read them both, and he had gone the way the letters pointed. I still walk that road on feast days, and I always look back.
