The fare that got in on Hanover Street at two in the morning had a French bulldog on the seat beside him, a dog with a face like a folded shield, blue and green in the sodium light. I asked the usual question, where to, and the woman said Bermondsey, and then she said the dog was called Admiral and he had views on the Thames. I laughed. Nobody laughs at two in the morning unless they've been crying first, my old governor used to say, and she hadn't been crying, but she had the look of someone who'd spent the evening deciding something.

We went over Tower Bridge with the lights of the warehouses flat and gold on the water. Admiral stood up on the seat and put his nose to the glass, his ears like two red sails, and she told me he'd been her brother's dog before her brother went off to Lagos for work and didn't come back for a year. Then she said nothing for a long time. The meter ticked. I didn't turn on the radio. You learn when silence is part of the fare.

At the lights on Tooley Street she tapped the partition and asked me to stop, though we were nowhere near the address she'd given. She got out, bent to the window, and told me to keep the change from a twenty. Then she opened the back door again and let Admiral out onto the pavement. He sat, looked up at me as though I were the one who'd been left, and trotted after her into the dark toward the river, the little blue-green shape of him bobbing like a lantern until the streetlight swallowed it.
