A pale hand is turned palm up, with the inner wrist in focus. A small, simple fox is drawn in thin black outline, sitting upright with its tail curled beside it. The shading is minimal, and the background is a soft blur of brown leaves.

You learn the fox before you learn the shift times. It comes down the tip at dusk, when the spoil still holds the day's warmth and the winding wheel has gone quiet above Hollin Row. It sits upright on the cinder path as though it has been asked to wait for a bus, tail curled neat beside its feet, and it watches the lamp room door the way your mother watches the clock.

Nobody else in the village gives it much thought. Your mother leaves heel crusts on the back wall and says foxes are only dogs who have given up on people. Danny throws stones. You have none to spare, so you sit on the upturned bucket and keep the fox company. It does not flinch when the cage groans below, and it does not move when the men come up black-faced and loud, swinging their tins.
The night the roof came down at the far level, the men walked up the lane slowly, and the fox was already gone. You remember the quiet more than the noise. Your father passed the bucket without seeing you. Then, on the wall where the ground ran flat, you saw the fox again, sitting exactly as it always had, facing the road as if it were counting them in.
In the morning the frost on the lamp room step was marked with small, neat prints, and beside them, pressed into the white, the shape of a tail laid down to keep the feet warm. Your father found you there with the cold coming up through your boots. He crouched without a word and set his tin open on the step beside you, the way you would leave a crust for something that might come back.
